SSL Offloading

SSL offloading occurs when SSL encrypted traffic is terminated (decrypted) at a reverse proxy with unencrypted traffic sent to backend servers. The reverse proxy is said to be providing SSL offloading services to the backend servers by relieving them of the, generally CPU intensive task, of decrypting client data and encrypting responses.

This frees up resources on backend servers and improves the performance of the client facing web services they provide as more computing resources are made available to process and respond to client requests.
